Metro Stars top Belmopan in BFL action
Good evening I’m James Adderley and you’re in for the latest rush on Sports Monday. Week five in the BFL football season found the have nots taking theirs from the have’s. Most prominent among the have’s going into the weekend were the Builders Hardware Bandits of Belmopan, who were perched at the very top of the standings. They were in the city at the behest of the Metro Stars; a struggling semi-pro team looking for only its second season win.
It was Kevin Roland of Metro Stars welcoming the league leader to town by scoring easily just thirteen minutes in. Meanwhile, is this the semi-pro leader Belmopan Bandits and is this sequence of events a pure aberration or the reality of semi-pro football today?
Again it?s the Bandits from point blank range and again it?s relegated to the keeper of squandered opportunities. At the other end Gilbert Brown sets table perfectly for Albert Hoare, but his release sails over the crossbar.
The Bandits respond with this attack from the right side, Oswald Young steals, travels inside the eighteen and the right foot punch is perfect for the 1-1 equalizer. The Stars look to go ahead from this spotkick, but Kevin Roland would certainly like to replay this moment.
At the other end Belmopan could make it 2-1 when Young fires, the rebound produces a set for Robert Cunningham, only he embarrasses himself–make that twice in a row–at the half it?s a 1-1 tie.
Coming out of intermission Metro Stars get the first opportunity to break the tie, but Albert Hoare simply misfires from the penalty spot; Pele has missed penalty two.
It?s the visitors who take the lead when Robert Cunningham catches up with this drainer and smashes it into the net for the 2-1 show. Apparently the Builders Hardware Bandits believe they don?t need to score again as they simply throw away this opportunity. Of course sometimes a little luck helps because this bomb should have given Belmopan a 3-1, only it bounces off the crossbar.
Then the unthinkable happens ? Albert Hoare catches up with this long pass and left foots it into the back of the net and we have a 2-2 ballgame.
A minute later Kevin Roland dances his way past two defenders and burns the keeper to give Metro Stars the 3-2 big W and their second win of their first semi-pro season.
In other results from the Regent Insurance Championship Cup, undefeated Juventus scorched Sagitun 1-zip at Independence. Lazio Jumex took out Real Verdes of O.W. 2-1. Kulture Yabra crushed Griga Express 2-zip at Dangriga. Jube Santa Elena fell 2-1 at home to Caye Caulker Turquoise and Yabra Dolphins picked up it?s first season win by dumping Acros 2-1 at the MCC Grounds Saturday night.
Turning to the basketball scene congratulations are in order for Wesley College, who beat Gwen Liz 15-10 Friday night to complete the season sweep and emerge female champion of the Central Division Basketball.
On the male side the Anglican Cathedral College beat Excelsior 36-23 on Friday night?s schedule to force a decisive game three for all the marbles, which is slated for this Friday.
