Belize City woman wins Gimme 5

It was an exciting climax to a week of fun. On Friday night most of Belize held its collective breath as host William Neal dialed the phone number of the winning entry in this year’s Gimme 5 celebration. Dorla Humes of Belize City was the lucky winner of a trip for two to L.A., Chicago or New York, courtesy of American Airlines, as well as five hundred dollars spending money from Channel 5. A number of this year’s winners hailed from the districts, reflecting Channel 5’s expanded coverage. Perhaps the strangest moment all week, however, was when it came time to give away a painting by well-known artist Teryl Godoy. The painting depicted a street scene in Belize City. And who won it? Believe it or not, Mervyn Laing, whose name was chosen from thousands of entries, is the same Mervyn Laing whose house is depicted in the painting.
