Habitat for Humanity seek volunteers
Instead of giving a present in a box, some people prefer to give a helping hand. Tomorrow the world will be celebrating International Volunteer Day and Habitat for Humanity, an NGO dedicated to providing basic housing for its members, is hoping volunteers will join them in the construction of a new home.
Mirna Paul, National Coordinator, Habitat for Humanity
“The U.N. decided that in 1985 they should have an International Volunteer Day just to observe the day as a day which we can focus on the volunteer work that people do giving their time and their effort into their different charities. We at Habitat would like to recognize our volunteers and make an appeal to the public and the different offices to send out their workers and people to come in and work and help celebrate the day. Just do something very good with whatever charity even if they don’t choose Habitat.”
“What we are doing is that we are building a home for our partner family. This is one of the eight houses, which will be built by the year 2001, June 2001. We are hoping to have eight houses, and this going to be number one out of those eight.”
“I want people to come out here, give their labour give their time. It will be very appreciated.”
Paul says that the home being built will be the property of Elsa Augustine. Anyone willing to help with the building’s construction may meet at 6618 Police Street Tuesday morning at eight. Jose Sanchez and a number of his colleagues from here at News 5 will be working on the project.
