Yabra shuts out defending champs Sagitun
Good evening I’m James Adderley and you’re locked into this fresh serving of Sports Monday. Defending BFL champions Sagitun rolled into the MCC Grounds for a crucial match-up with the city team Kulture Yabra, the only team in the jewel with a winning record against the Independence team. Would the Yabra dominance continue today?
We start off with Yabra keeper Charlie Slusher showing off his best and yes Charlie – it works. Folks his picture gives us a glimpse of future things to come and you can see Virgilio Ruiz loses authority when he allows himself to be swamped by the Sagitun players – and Hilberto Muschamp is already upset.
And no folks, these guys are not members of the umbrella association, Raymond Waters is throwing a tantrum today. The soggy pitch certainly hinders both ball clubs from perfect execution, but it?s still a nil-nil show. Yabra looks to take advantage of this water-aided possession to get on the scoreboard, but the Sagitun defence hangs tough.
Now watch this Sagitun defensive miscue, fortunately for them they do get away with it. Of course it is a tough ballgame today and Raul Celiz would concur after this bruising blow from behind – they would misplay the ensuing spotkick atop the eighteen.
On this trip downfield Sagitun goes to the aerial attack, only there’s not enough punch on this header from Robert Muschamp. At the half, we have a scoreless stalemate.
Four minutes into second half, this centre from off the left wing skids through and Donnie Tun beats Darren Hinds with a blast that gives Yabra a 1-zip lead. Sagitun looks to Bent Burgess for the equalizer and he thinks he deserves a penalty here, but Ruiz rules otherwise.
We can’t really tell what precipitated this disturbance – Referee Ruiz speaks to Muschamp – it’s a heated discussion. The ref then raises the red flag. He tries to walk away, but Hilberto does get his two cents in until his teammates help him off the field.
This spotkick provides tense moments for Sagitun, but they get out unscathed. Meanwhile, this spotkick finds Paulie Bradley, who gets taken down inside the eighteen by Robert Muschamp, the referee makes the penalty call. Ian Henry takes his displeasure with the call into the face of referee Ruiz. After consulting with the assistant referee, he red-cards Henry. And now Ian Henry must be restrained, but he insists and almost has to confront the long arm of the law.
After all this, Vallan Symms steps up and it?s a 2-nil Yabra lead and that’s the way it ended. Yes Yabra still has Sagitun’s number.
In other results from The Regent Insurance Cup Tournament, Builder’s Bandits bombed Yabra Dolphins 4-2. Acros beat Jube 2-1; Caye Caulker Turquoise jolted Griga Tropical 2-1; Lazio Jumex rolled over Metro Stars 4-2, while Juventus and Real Verdes settled for a 2-2 stalemate.
In closing we want to remind you that the Belize City high school basketball is currently into the playoffs. We are going to give you that result when we come back for our next broadcast right here on Channel 5. We also want to congratulate the five-man team headed by Bracket, formerly of the BDF, who ran all the way from Benque to Belize to raise funds, for about seventy miles. There were only five brave Belizeans, we salute them.
