Students compete in nutrition quiz
The theme for this year’s National Nutrition Week is “Make the right choices.” That is exactly what some students had to do earlier today at the first ever National Nutrition Quiz Competition.

Today second form students from Belmopan Baptist, Belmopan Comprehensive, Stann Creek Ecumenical, Muffles College, Toledo Community College, St. Catherine Academy, Wesley College, Escuela Mexico and Nazarene High School came together at the City Center to participated in the finals of the National Nutrition quiz competition.

“We are trying to introduce or promote nutrition in secondary schools as a means of improving health throughout. Because these students are going to be adults later on and we would want to change the trend of what?s happening to the population not only in Belize but also throughout the Caribbean where you have a whole lot of people dying and being ill and can’t work because they are suffering from chronic disease illness. Also addressing the problem of eating the right type of food, exercising on a daily basis to reduce the risk of over nutrition and under nutrition.”
While some members of the audience did not seem interested about the topic of discussion, the contestants were very nervous about their performance.

“They’re going to be getting monetary prizes in the equivalent of one year tuition fee, second prize is registration fee and third prize is book fee.”
By the end of the afternoon, first place went to Wodsworth Lucas of Wesley College. Second Place to Stephanie Rivero of Belmopan Comprehensive, and third place to Jackie Yen of Saint Catherine Academy. Jose Sanchez Reporting for News Five.
The event was sponsored by Belize Mills Limited, the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education. Next year the winner of the contest will advance to the regional competition, which will have participation from eighteen English speaking countries in the Caribbean.
