Family remanded for keeping firearm without license
There was some drama in court today when a mother, father and son were remanded into custody on charges of Keeping a Firearm without a Gun License. The mother, fifty-three year old Lovinia Canto, fainted when she heard that she, along with her husband, forty-nine year old Mario Canto and their son, twenty-six year old Jason Canto, would be going to prison. Lovinia was taken for medical attention and is currently in stable condition. Things turned around for her when the Director of Public Prosecutions, Cheryl-Lynn Branker-Taitt, directed Magistrate Edd Usher to withdraw the charges against the mother and son because her husband claimed full ownership of the weapon. Usher was also informed that Jason is to be brought back to court on Wednesday to have the charges against him withdrawn. He will, however, have to answer to having more ammunition than allowed by the license for his own point thirty-eight revolver. The Canto family was represented by Attorney Michael Peyrefitte who argued that the Magistrate can impose a fine instead of the custodial sentence for firearm and ammunition convictions.
