GOB to insure government vehicles
Over the years the Government of Belize has spent a substantial amount of money to settle accident claims due to its policy of not insuring government vehicles. On Tuesday, however, Cabinet decided the time has come to change that strategy, and will for the first time insure the government motor fleet. They are currently urging local insurance companies to submit their tender. During the first year of insurance coverage, only Third Party Act protection will be obtained. Cabinet has agreed that government will cover excess liability in the case of accidents due to mechanical failure of the vehicle. Any accidents caused by the driver’s negligence, however, will be covered by the driver.
Meanwhile, Cabinet has agreed to introduce a bill in the next House of Representatives for the establishment of the Toledo Development Corporation. The TDC is the result of a project jointly financed by the Government of Belize and the Interamerican Development Bank, who spent considerable time in research, discussion and consultation with stakeholders in the southern district to identify their needs and development initiatives. The main job of the new Toledo Development Corporation will be to promote the sustainable development of the Toledo District.
And in a further move to improve the delivery of public service, the practice of officers refusing to collect government revenue after three o’ clock has been abolished. Cabinet has instructed all government departments to remain open throughout the working day, to collect revenues.
