History book re-released in Belize

Story Picture
“The Rise and Fall of the Black Caribs,” a historical documentation on the struggles of the Garinagu in the Eastern Caribbean island of St. Vincent has been re-released for the Belizean market. The fifty-two page paperback book is written by Vincentian doctors I. Kirby and C. Martin. Godsman Ellis, a member of the Board of Directors of the National Garifuna Council says the re-release is timely as this is Garifuna Week.

Godsman Ellis, Member, National Garifuna Council

“This book to me, is an important one in terms of looking at ourselves today in the Garifuna diaspora and also seeing that where we came from was a place of struggles. It shows the resistance and the strong character in the Garifunas in not being subdued. I would like to get this as a message to our fellow Garifuna who are still facing some struggles though of a different nature.”

“They have done considerable research judging from their bibliography in the book. So I am quite comfortable with the information that is in the book, bearing in mind that I have also done some reading on my own from primary sources, and it does collaborates.”

Ann-Marie Williams

“So the history is not heavily romanticized or coloured from your point?”

Godsman Ellis

“Absolutely not! It is factual. As a matter of fact, I don’t remember seeing any subjective point being raised. It is strictly historical and factual.”

The book is on sale at the Angelus Press and the Belize Book Shop in Belize City and from Garifuna Council Chapters in the districts.
