BFL football returns after setbacks

Good evening I’m James Adderley and welcome aboard this big time ride on Sports Monday. The drought has been extensive, prolonged by constant feuding at the very top of the Belizean football structure, but now mercifully it’s over, the football drought that is. The BFL resumed regular season action over the weekend with six games played. We caught up with the MCC match up between Acros of Belize City and the defending champions Sagitun hailing from Independence.

We open to the early Acros attack as Arthur “The Mob” Flowers fires inside the box, but the ball screams off the crossbar. Sagitun’s reply comes in the form of this header from Wilhelm Coe, but it travels high.

It’s just fourteen minutes in when this corner kick from the Brazilian Soto finds, who else, but Bent Burgess, and the 1-zip lead is automatic.

Acros get the chance to equalize–in fact it’s a couple of chances–but come away empty handed against Darren Hinds. At the other end watch Robert Muschamp with the perfect push through to Derys Benavides for the 2-zip Sagitun lead, but the shot is right at the keeper.

In fact the keeper might have emerged with the MVP for Acros as he is called upon time and time again to maintain–and he does. Downfield Acros goes to the aerial attack, but it’s easy pickings for Hinds.

Then Bent Burgess gets this shot for his second of the day, but again the Acros keeper comes up with a marvelous save. At the half the defending semi-pro champion is up by one.

Immediately into second half, Acros goes to Arzu for the equalizer, but his offering heads to the clouds. From the right side is Benavides firing to extend the lead, but it’s outside the target.

Now here is looking the gift horse in the mouth people and it’s obvious scoring is a problem for the Acros offence.

Did we say scoring is the problem? Then this repetition can only be intended for emphasis.

Of course last year’s goleador Bent Burgess knows his business well as he flicks this ball with the head over the keeper for the 2-zip Sagitun lead.

In search of the consolation goal, Acros goes for the execution from the spotkick – Sagitun goes on to post the 2-zip big W.

In other results from football play over the weekend, Metro Stars got its first semi-pro win hurting San Pedro United 2-1. Builders Hardware hammered Griga Tropical 3-zip Saturday night at Capital City. Legends Real Verdes burned the city team Kulture Yabra 2-1 yesterday at the Norman Broaster Stadium. Lagio Jumex, the National Amateur Champions, got its first semi-pro win beating Jube 4-2 at O.W., while Juventus blanked Caye Caulker Turquoise 2-nil out at San Pedro.

In other football news Efrain Perez’s Stealers edged RB Texaco 3-2 yesterday in Orange Walk to take the over thirty-five football tournament sponsored by Johnny Briceno.

Now let’s head to City Centre for the National High School Male Volleyball Championship match staged on Saturday. We join the exchange of civilities between King’s College on the right of your screen and Independence High to your left.

The first serve comes from Independence High and it’s mishandled to give the South an early lead over King’s College of the North. King’s College gets the nice touch from Enrique Belisle as they keep the score close. But the Independence team is just too tough as demonstrated here. Independence High would go on to win in two sets 25-10, 25-16. We certainly want to say congratulations.

Now here are the official results. St. Catherine’s Academy wins the female title with Independence High finishing second and Mopan Technical settling for third. On the male side, it was Independence High, Wesley College and King’s College in that order.
