Prison inmate commits suicide
An inmate at the Hattieville Prison is dead of an apparent suicide. At around three fifteen this afternoon, twenty-year-old Jason Flowers was found dead in his cell, hanging from an electrical wire tied around his neck. Flowers was serving a fourteen year sentence for a series of crimes and was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday after prison officials found a derringer pistol inside his maximum security cell two months ago. At the time of Flowers death, prison governor, Bernard Adolphus was accompanying a group of visiting justices on a tour of the compound. Adolphus says they do not know why Flowers committed suicide.

“We were inspecting the compound when an officer ran to us and said that there seems to be a problem in Jason Flowers’ cell. We all went upstairs to check the cell and discovered Jason hanging on an electrical rope as the case may be. Subsequently we got inside and I personally went in the cell and felt his body. It was still warm, but there was no pulse. We sent for a medical doctor and the team and they came in and they looked at it and pronounced him dead.”

“No, no, no, thank God he was by himself. I can boast that he was by himself. Personally at this time I am not suspecting any foul play, but the police, who are doing the investigation, will acknowledge that.”

“Before discovering Flowers’ body, did you all have any reason to be concerned? Was he acting despondent?”
Bernard Adolphus
“Personally no, I cannot say that. Up to this morning he was on the recreation grounds. I don’t know what he was doing, but he was on the recreation grounds this morning. He was in jail for a number of offences, dangerous harm, ten years from the Supreme Court; escape from the prisons, four years; and escape while in conveyance from the police to D.O.C.”
Adolphus says they do have a counselling programme for the inmates but that Flowers gave no indication that he needed help.
