No Laws on the Recording of Conversations
Attorney Audrey Matura asserts that there are no privacy laws in regards to the recording of conversations and that there was no mention of confidentiality. Humes did not include Singh’s disparaging comments in his article, which was soon removed from the Breaking Belize news site—we are told it was at the request of Singh to Humes’ superiors. Matura explains why there was no breach of privacy.
Audrey Matura, Attorney-at-law
“No, there is no law.”
Duane Moody
“None. So what could he be charged for?”
Audrey Matura
“He can’t be charged with anything. For doing his job? You know it would have been different if Mister Humes edited that and made it appear to be a message that he was not giving; then it would have been very different. Or it would have been different if Mister Singh had said to him I am telling this out of confidentiality; he then becomes a confidential source and Mister Humes could not use it then. It would be different if he is saying look, I am telling you this off the record. I don’t want them to know that I am saying it. He did none of that; there is no such law.”
