SJC beats E.P. Yorke 47-33 in basketball action

Story Picture
Good evening I’m James Adderley and you’re locked into another blast on Sports Monday. The Central Division Secondary School competition has become a plus for basketball right about now and we caught up with Friday night’s ticket at the City Centre.

And as you can see high school basketball is a bustle of energy, complete with the spectacle of committed cheerleaders on the sidelines. They belong to the defending female champions St. Catherine’s Academy, who are locked in this bitter struggle with archrivals Palotti High.

Rhondine Ortiz gets the convert going early, picking up the loose ball and streaking downcourt for the first two points of the ballgame. She would finish with the game high seven points.

The Palotti response comes from Ursula Johnson who lays it up for two. Points were hard to come by as demonstrated by this mad scramble that culminates in a SCA turnover off this miss shot from Aphania Avila, Tamia Usher grabs the rebound, the long pass downcourt to Terese Casimiro end the half, SCA is up in a 9-2 score.

At the resumption of hostilities Casimiro stays with this play to keep SCA with a ten-point cushion. And yes, Mr. Policeman, its imperative you enforce security for students and fans who go to the City Centre to watch the show and not star the show.

But back to the ballgame and Palotti goes to Ursula Johnson for offense-she hits this bucket-she would finish with six points. St. Catherine’s goes on to post the 15-9 big W. In the female under card Gwen Liz got over Sadie Vernon in a 10-7 final score.

Meanwhile folks, we also got to see the defending male champions St. John’s College in action against perennial challenger E.P. Yorke and it certainly was a wild ride.

The first points of the ballgame drops for E.P. Yorke courtesy of number eight Arthur Crawford. Crawford remains hot from his favourite spot and knock down the three for E.P.

But SJC comes alive–Hubert Samudah dishes to Englebert Cherrington and he scores with emphasis and we have the first tie at six a piece. E.P. goes to Crawford who hits it for two. Erlan Garbutt then comes up with the steal and makes SJC pay.

SJC comes back with Rumile Arana who finds the glass for the bucket. Cherrington then battles to get two the hard way. He does and at the half E.P. Yorke is up by two.

Out of intermission SJC takes its first lead from this baseline jumper in the corner. Rumile Arana then looks for three and gets three for SJC as they begin to pull away. The feed goes to Lindberg Graham and he would sink this big three pointer.

In the mean Cherrington continues to hit his free throws down the stretch-he would finish with sixteen points to lead SJC to the 47-33 big W over E.P. Yorke.

In other high school action, Wesley College became the Central Division Volleyball Champion after winning the rubber match with Nazarene High 25-20, 25-17. Congratulations are in order. Wesley joins SCA in representing Belize at the Nationals this Friday at Ecumenical High in Dangriga. If you’re in the area make sure you visit and support these juvenile athletes.

We also want to remind you that November fourth brings the resumption of the BFL football schedule. To date, the league has not been able to supply us with the schedule for this weekend. As soon as we get it, you’ll do. That’s it for now.
