Dangriga Shooting is Gang Related
ComPol Chester Williams also spoke about the gun violence in Dangriga where a man and woman were injured. On Monday night, just before eight o’clock, Frederick Coote and Tamera Nunez were inside a house when at least one gunman trained his weapon towards the residence and opened fire. Both Coote and Nunez were struck multiple times, but police say that Coote was the intended target. Commissioner Williams says that the incident was triggered by an ongoing gang feud in that municipality which they are closely monitoring.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
“We are also monitoring two groups in Dangriga that are seemingly want to restart the issue in Dangriga. You would know that last year, there were a number of gang-related incidents in Dangriga and we had done certain things with a view to control and contain the problem. But we are seeing now that those two groups are going at it again. Let me say to them that we are monitoring and if it is that we see the problem persists between them, do not feel like only Belize City is amenable to a state of emergency; it can go anywhere across the country. We are not going to tolerate any gang member, especially now, to believe that they will hold the masses of our people hostage, it is not going to work. The incident I am speaking about in terms of the gang-related incident in Dangriga, a woman and a male person was shot. And again the shooter indiscriminately just opened fire on a house, not knowing who or what the bullet will ketch, similar to what we were seeing in Belize City before we went into a state of emergency. Those senseless acts cannot be tolerated. We have an idea who those persons are who did it; they are in custody, but we are trying to see if we would be able to gather sufficient evidence to be able to lay charges against them.”
