Social Distancing in Water Taxis Causing a Headache for the Police
Commissioner of Police Chester Williams addressed the concerns arising from the lack of social distancing at the water taxi terminals and on their vessels. While these can now operate, today another picture surfaced on social media of a water taxi filled to capacity with passengers leaving San Pedro and heading into the City. Even though the passengers wore masks, there was no physical distancing observed. The photograph is on the heels of a video that was circulated on Monday of persons clustered on a pier at San Pedro. Today, Chester Williams also visited with manager of the water taxi and explains that changes must be made there as well.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
“One of the greatest concerns that people on the island as well as those on mainland have is the issue relating to water taxi. Now there are several photographs going around on social media showing that these water taxis are overcrowded. And so I had visited the water taxi terminal here in San Pedro and had spoken to the manager and explained to him what the requirements are. And I am happy to say that I see they have put things in place to ensure social distancing during boarding. Now, the issue is whether or not there is sufficient being done to ensure social distancing when unloading. And so what I said to him is that he must ensure that whenever they are unloading, they let out passengers one at a time and each passenger must give the one ahead of him or her sufficient distance before coming off the boat so as to maintain social distance.”
