Fisherfolk in Corozal Gets Help from OCEANA Belize & Rotaract Club

Fisherfolk from the communities of Chunox, Copper Bank and Sarteneja are getting some much needed help on Friday.  Twenty-five deserving families will receive two weeks of food supply to relieve them during this trying time. The effort is spearheaded by OCEANA Belize and being supported by the Rotaract Club of Corozal. The service club was helping families in Corozal Town and OCEANA Belize decided to extend the relief to the communities that are farther out. As we found out today, the Rotaract and Rotary Clubs in Corozal have joined forces to help even more families in the coming days.

“The collaboration that we have with Oceana is to help the fishing communities here in Corozal, to help those families affected by COVID, especially in those areas where it is kinda hard for them to be out doing their work. So, we will be helping them with groceries for the next two weeks.”

“Approximately how many families will benefit?”

“About twenty five families are going to benefit from this.  The system we are using is a coupon system since it is kinda hard for us to get to those areas. So, we have decided to use virtual coupons with the assistance of the stores and these families can go to the store and purchase the amount that is listed on the coupon and they can get anything with the exception of alcohol, so they can get rice, beans, any canned goods.”

“They are actually working with more food programmes and they are joining up with Rotary to do a bigger food programme. And with this food programme, we will no longer work with coupons and will actually go to the store and buy the products. The reason we did the coupon is so that it is contact less and to prevent the spread of Corona Virus but now that the country has opened up, we will be able to go to the stores.”

“Definitely. People have been writing us on facebook and texting us. It has been overwhelming because right now we are not fundraising and we are solely waiting on donations.”
