Cache of Guns and Ammo Found in Dangriga

In recent weeks, there has been a spike in gun violence in Dangriga where four persons were injured in separate shootings. The incidents, according to Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, were the result of rivalry between two groups in that southern municipality. Well since then, several operations were carried out in the south of the country and on Friday, members of the Anti-Gang Task Force were deployed to the area. The operation, conducted in the Second New Site area, led to the discovery of a cache of weapons. Assistant Commissioner of Police Joseph Myvett says that the guns and ammunition will be tested to see if they were used in any recent crimes.

“A search was conducted on an empty lot where police retrieved a black plastic bag and when opened it contained one Mack ten weapon along with fifty-two nine millmetre rounds of ammunition; one thirty-eight special revolver along with two thirty-eight rounds and one hundred and five point two-twenty-three rounds of ammunition. No one was found in the area at the time so those items were retrieved and will be sent to the lab for analysis. The investigation continues and we do expect that we will recover more weapons as a part of the investigation.”

“You have any ideas who these cache of weapons and bullets belong to? Are you investigating that?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“Well yes we are and that is a part of the investigation, hence the reason why these things are being sent to the lab to determine whether any prints can be lifted from them or whether or not these weapons have been used in the commission of any previous crimes.”

Police also canvassed an unnamed caye east of Dangriga Town and found a green in colour AK-forty-seven rifle with an empty magazine. It was wrapped in a grey canvas and hidden on the island. No one was in the area so the high-powered weapon is also being forwarded to the National Forensic Laboratory for testing.
