NEMO puts damage at US $200 million
The National Emergency Management Organisation has released a preliminary estimate of damages from hurricane Keith and the figure they have come up with is 200 million U.S. dollars. That breaks down to 45 million in crop damage, 100 million in property damage and 55 million in damage to basic infrastructure such as roads, streets, drains and utilities. Meanwhile, as government seeks long term funding for the rebuilding effort, offers of emergency aid are coming in. The Inter-American Development Bank has presented a cheque for $100,000 Belize dollars, Taiwan has cancelled its annual National Day party and donated what the affair would have cost to disaster relief, the USA has given some cash and is sending helicopters and equipment, Mexico is sending supplies, and numerous churches and NGOs have organised campaigns for homeless residents of the islands.
