Destruction of Clandestine Airstrips Continue

The destruction of several clandestine airstrips across the country is an ongoing exercise being carried out by the Ministry of National Security, in light of their usage for the illegal landing of drug planes.  While Chief Executive Officer Felix Enriquez did not divulge operational details or specific locations, he told News Five via phone this evening that the demolition of these makeshift runways are part of a broader effort by government to confront the issue of frequent drug plane landings in the remote reaches of the country.

On the Phone: Felix Enriquez, C.E.O., Ministry of National Security

“There is not much more, it is what it is.  There are, as you know, several clandestine airstrips all over the country of Belize and as you know, we have limited resources to monitor the landing of the planes and determining where they will land so we still have that challenge as do all the countries that are around us.  And so one of our strategy is to destroy the airstrips that are hard to reach and are likely to be used for illicit activity.  So that’s what’s going on, it’s part of a broader strategy to counter illicit activities.”
