New venue for jump up proves popular
Following the official speeches and parade on the 21st morning, the mood mellowed considerably in the afternoon as the traditional street party was held in Belize City. News Five’s Jose Sanchez and Rick Romero interrupted their own holiday to bring us some sights and sounds.

Traditionally, the Independence Day celebrations have been held on Regent and Albert Streets. The September Celebrations Committee received numerous complaints about the venue downtown, and for the first time in 19 years, the jump up was relocated to the Newtown Barracks.

“Everyone could get around more easily. Everything is more easily accessible and you find that to move from one point to another, all you have to do is walk in a straight line.”

“Celebrations are cool and every Belizean out there, happy Independence Day!”
The bashment provided the usual entertainment of food and drink for the adults, but for the first time facilities were available for children to enjoy the 21st.

“It’s much cooler than downtown. And everyone will enjoy it because there’s a nice little park to walk.”

“Because the sea breeze and pretty clothes and everything.”

“I like it out here because these are many people out there and this is the 50 year anniversary of the independence.”

“Downtown is a tradition for me. But I will say it’s much cooler out here. With this kind of music we got it made. This is the first test and I like it very much, but I hope one day it goes back downtown.”

Despite the large crowds there was plenty of security at the event and only one minor scuffle was reported.
