Tonight’s comedy contest may signal the end of official celebrations, but next week another major milestone will be celebrated by Belize’s ruling political party. On September 29th the People’s United Party marks its 50th anniversary. To commemorate the historic occasion the post office has released a new set of stamps.

Elston Wade, Acting Postmaster General

“These stamps consist of five individual stamps: a 10 cents value, a 25 cents, 60 cents, 75 cents and one dollar. These stamps depict Belize from a colony to a nation. The stamps are in effect like ambassadors to Belize, in this instance they certainly show off our history. Our very unique history and they also allows us to generate some revenue by people who collect stamps as a hobby and this is done by philatelist worldwide. Starting from today we will be mailing stamps to these philatelist who have been collecting stamps from Belize for many, many years.”

The People’s United Party evolved from the People’s Committee, which had been formed on New Year’s Eve of 1949 to protest the British government’s decision to devalue the Belize Dollar.
