It was a large and excited crowd that packed the National Stadium on Saturday night to cheer for their favourites in the Carnival King and Queen Competition. News Five was there to record the action.

“I feel very excited. This is the first day I came in for carnival as king.”

Jacqueline Woods

“How hard did you practice?”

Beadau Banks

“Very hard.”

Jacqueline Woods

“What did you do?”

“Actually that costume was so heavy I had to turn around a lot so that the breeze could not blow me down.”

Jacqueline Woods

“Who are you representing?”

Beadau Banks

The lovely Sun God.”

Announcer

“Carnival Queen 2000, C-Jamm Mas Band!”

(Crowd yells and screams)

Anita Hamilton, Senior Queen, C-Jamm

“We went in not so much for the win, but we came in with full force. We worked very hard and of course we expected to be on top, but I don’t want to be saying come out with the win. But we worked very hard and came out with full force.”

Jacqueline Woods

“How did you prepare for your performance tonight?”

Anita Hamilton

“Well I think it’s just a mind thing and for the love of it.

Jacqueline Woods

“Your costume didn’t give any kinds of problems tonight?”

Anita Hamilton

“Actually no, but it had some weight. It really carries some weight.”

Announcer

“Ladies and gentlemen, the senior king for the year 2000, C-Jamm!”

(Crowd goes wild)

“I feel good, I tried for carnival king for five years, and this is a reward for me. For five years I tried and all the years that I tried, some years, the costumes broke down and I couldn’t put it up, but this time it paid off. I feel good.

Jacqueline Woods

“Did your costume give you any problems tonight?”

Brent Hamilton

“I didn’t feel the problem, because I felt that problem or no problem, I was going to work it. It’s all about love. What I feel about life and what life should be, beautiful

Junior Queen was Deione Buckley of Jump Street Posse. First prize in each senior division was five thousand dollars, while the junior champs took home three thousand. Second and third place finishers also received cash awards.
