Dr. Sharmayne Saunders, the New head of the UWI Open Campus

While at the UWI, we caught up with Doctor Sharmayne Saunders, who has been elevated as the Head of the University of the West Indies, Open Campus in Belize City. She joined the university in 2008 and worked her way up the ranks to her latest appointment which assumed weeks ago. Saunders has an impressive and solid record of public service, scholarly work and research. Earlier today, she told News Five she is ready to lead the institution forward.

“It was part of the career path that I was taking and indeed we had succession planning, but in any university, those positions had to be advertised. I know it was a competitive appointment because several persons around the region had to apply and were interviewed as well. But I have been working with the university in my capacity as programme officer, the second officer in charge for almost twelve years and so this is a natural progression. I am happy that I am now in this capacity and I can continue to strengthen my relationships with the public sector the private sector and civil society as well.”
