B.H.A. Releases Results of Airport Reopening Survey

Ted Tejada

The Belize Hotel Association has released the results of a poll it conducted over the weekend and as much as ninety-seven percent of those who participated in the poll are of the opinion that should rapid testing become available and specific protocols are in place, that the Philip Goldson International Airport should reopen by August first.  Of the number of hotels who responded to the questionnaire, seventy-seven percent say that if the P.G.I.A. does not open by August first, they will be forced to terminate the services of up to fifty employees.  The B.H.A. poll comes a week after the Belize Tourism Industry Association released the results of its survey which was a fifty-fifty split among its membership.  B.H.A. President, Ted Tejada, at a press conference this evening, elaborated on the findings.

Ted Tejada, President, Belize Hotel Association

“What the Belize Hotel Association embarked on, we decided to do a poll of our hotel members.  Our hotel association is actually comprised of members of the real estate, the airlines and other businesses that really do business with the tourism sector but do not really have a hotel.  But for the survey purposes, we decided to poll only hoteliers.  So we decided to do our hotel members and we also looked at the other top hundred hotels in the country of Belize which actually, more than fifty percent of the B.H.A. are on the top twenty producers of the country of Belize in terms of accommodations revenue.  When we did the tally, actually these hundred and forty hotels that we polled on this survey produced eighty percent of the entire revenue for accommodations in the country of Belize.  So we were looking at a very important group of hotels that have eighty percent of the entire country in terms of hotel revenue is produced.”
