New book launched in Belize City
After nearly two decades of unmitigated bombardment from satellite television, books are enjoying a renaissance in Belize. This morning I had the opportunity to preview the latest offering.

Three years ago, Felicia Hernandez returned to Belize after migrating to the United States almost thirty-one years ago. Hernandez, who has spent most of her life teaching in Belize and the United States, has also been busy putting the experience she has gained on paper. Her latest publication, “Reflections and Other Family Stories” tells of the trials of Belizean women and other social ills.

“In her book, she focuses on the plight of the Belizean woman who in section nine of Reflections and Other Family Stories, talks about the fact that society has taught us as Belizean women to be seen and not heard. Listen to her words as I read them. She writes, “As I grew older I wanted to address many issues that I was concerned about. Unfortunately, however, due to societal pressures, I found myself shying away from being articulate as I knew I was capable of being. The unspoken sentiment of the day was that Belizean women should be seen and not heard.”
Hernandez also focuses on the empowerment of the Belizean woman and the need to provide Belizean children with a good education. She says she was encouraged by many to share the many stories she has to tell and encourages Belizean women to be the best they can be.

“So many things I get my inspiration from, other writers and I feel that I should share my stories with my people in Belize.
“To be strong, stronger than their ancestors were, to keep on keeping on. I know they are doing a lot now, to keep on doing for themselves. Keep on being heard.”
