Clean-up campaign in Cayo

Story Picture
Despite the showery outbreaks, today the San Ignacio and Santa Elena town councils, started a clean-up campaign to rid the town of dirt and other debris that accumulated over time. Because the Cayo District is one of the most traveled destinations by Belizeans and tourists alike, the town councils felt it was important for the activity to get off the ground. According to Orlando Habet, Mayor of San Ignacio and Santa Elena it has been difficult for them to get the job done because they simply did not have the human resources available.

“Since the rainy season started and the bushes and other debris are catching up with us, so we had to contact the services of S.E.L., who are giving us a very good deal. They are also assisting us with other transportation, with bags and everything else. We have had donations from the Ministry of Agriculture, PAHO, BTB, The San Ignacio Town Council and we definitely have the business people in San Ignacio and Santa Elena, who have donated generously towards this campaign.”

“What we have to do after this, is do some maintenance because if we can keep up the work that we are doing here, then hopefully we can do some maintenance after this and it will be easier to manage. Today we have the clean-up campaign in Santa Elena and we’re moving from the Loma Luz Boulevard and we are going southwest to Salazar Street. We have gone with our crew, and we have already finished George Price Avenue, Salazar Street and Carrillo Puerto Avenue. Hopefully by this afternoon, we can reach towards the football stadium. Tomorrow we plan to do some areas in San Ignacio, which is also really bad and if we have some time and if the crew is up to it, we might be able to do at least half day on Sunday.”

The campaign is scheduled to continue over the weekend and is being supported by Sanitation Enterprises Limited of Belize City, the citizens and the business community of the Cayo District.
