Belizeans perform at CARIFESTA VII
On Monday, the Belizean contingent attending CARIFESTA VII, at St. Kitts and Nevis, is scheduled to return home. According to a government press release, our local artists have been involved in a number of performances. On Wednesday, at a UNESCO sponsored celebration, Andy Palacio and Punta Rebels took part in an outdoor event featuring drummers from all over the region. That same night the Belize delegation was part of the Sandy Point Community Festival where there were performances by the Mayan Harp Ensemble, Andy Palacio and Punta Rebels. At the book fair, a collection of books written by Belizeans, were presented to the public library of St. Kitts/Nevis by Joy Ysaguirre, Belize’s chief librarian. Meanwhile, artist Gilvano Swasey of the Image Factory said that visitors to the Belizean art exhibition have been impressed with the pieces on display. Today, the festivities continue with a solemn ceremony as part of CARIFESTA’s Indigenous Focus. The ceremony commemorates the massacre of the islands indigenous people in the 1600’s.
