PM appoints members of Mixed Commission

Prime Minister Said Musa has appointed five persons who will represent Belize on the Mixed Commission. The commission was established at a ministerial meeting held in July at the OAS headquarters in Washington D.C. between Belize and Guatemala. The Commission consists of five commissioners each from both countries and is charged with the responsibility of receiving and implementing proposals for confidence building measures aimed at promoting permanent friendly relations and cooperation between Belize and Guatemala. Other areas that will be addressed include educational and cultural exchanges, trade promotion, tourism development, counter-narcotics operation and others. The Belizean side of the Mixed Commission is headed by Ambassador James Murphy and includes Erwin Contreras, Area Representative for Cayo West, Godwin Hulse, Managing Director of Forest Drive Enterprises Incorporated, Lois Young-Barrow of Lois Young-Barrow and Company Law Firm, and Dr. Ludwig Palacio of the University of Belize, Punta Gorda campus. The Guatemalans are headed by Doctor Efrain Aguilera, former Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs and includes Haroldo Quej, Secretary of the Environment, Lucy Barrios de Mendez from the Office of the Vice Presidency, Carlos Morales, Director General in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Lucrecia Barrientos, Advisor in the Ministry of the Interior. The first meeting of the commission is scheduled to take place in Guatemala City on Monday, August twenty-eight.
