Belizean American Businessman Gives 10 High School Scholarships

Belizean American businessman, Roman Palma is gifting scholarships for tuition and uniform to ten high school students from around the country. The Roman Peace Scholarship Fund was created by Palma to assist those less fortunate to pursue their academic goals. Entries were sent to an email address and after they were vetted by two Belizean professionals living in Europe, the lucky ten students were selected. In a recorded statement, Palma says that there is need for financial support to families and students who are facing hardships due to the pandemic.

“The ten recipients are: Casian Chavarria, San Pedro High School; Shebeese Patt, San Roman Village, Corozal District; Ira Sho, Stann Creek Georgetown Technical High School; Arjeli Kel, San Victor RC School, Corozal District; Aidan Guzman, Sacred Heart College, San Ignacio; Emily Requeña, Escuela Secundaria; Angel Sanchez, Saint Ignatius, Santa Elena; Maria Cal, Santa Elena, Ajaya Hernandez, Edward P. Yorke High School and Elsie Bol, San Juan Bautista High School, Orange Walk District. What is clear is the overwhelming need for financial support and hardship families are facing during this pandemic, including how they sustain education for their children and young people. We received over eight hundred email applications for consideration within a week for the ten scholarships. Due to the unprecedented number of applications, it is physically impossible for individual response to be sent to all the unsuccessful applicants. I would like to use this medium to say thank you to all the applicants. Unfortunately, there is only funding for ten students and we had to be measured and fair in the decision making process. I hope that there will be other opportunities for families and students to access the financial support they require to pursue their education.”
The lucky students will be contacted individually to be informed of the outcome; their respective schools will also be informed.
