C.W.U. Members Demonstrate Against Salary Cuts

Wayne Lambey

Members of the Christian Workers who work at the Port of Belize this afternoon staged a protest in front of the Port in Belize City. They are complaining that the Port is cutting their salary by ten percent. The management at the Port says that COVID-19 has affected its revenue streams and as such certain cost-saving measures will be instituted. But the union members have been demanding that the Port makes available to them, financial records which they can study to determine if the salary cut is necessary. That has not happened and so at midday today, union members started their protest.  Wayne Lambey, the union’s staff representative addressed the media.

“Our demands remain the same. We want the port to facilitate a discussion. I don’t think that is unreasonable to anybody. We already made contact with the Labour Minister and the Labour Department. They are supposed to have contact with port between today and Friday. Hoping that that discussion goes well there will be a tripartite discussion between the PBL, CWU and the Labour Department. Hopefully, that will resolve this tension that we have here. But we are proposing to continue this type of demonstration to show that people at PBL our lives matter too, our ten percent matters. That affects me all the way to the bank. Who will give us back those deficit tht we fall in the next six months.”
