Security guard killed in Cayo holdup
Residents of San Ignacio are once again wondering what happened to their once peaceful town. Early Sunday morning, just after midnight, two masked men, armed with a pistol and sawed-off shotgun, robbed the Texaco gas station on the Benque Road. When the crime was over, security guard Julio Perez was dead, shot to the face and chest. His colleague, gas attendant Eduardo Arias was luckier, losing one hundred and fifty dollars instead of his life. It is believed that Perez was hit as he tried to defend himself with his shotgun. No arrests have yet been made, as the police are seeking to identify the gunmen. The last murder to take place in San Ignacio occurred on July twenty-fourth when twenty-year old Geoffrey Mas was shot point blank in the back of the head. Mas, a caretaker at the Cahal Pech Maya site, had given police information, which had led to the identification and detention of several suspects in an earlier robbery of the site. The prime suspect in both the murder and robbery is Jordy Espat. Espat, believed to be living in Guatemala, has yet to be apprehended by police from either country.
