Silver medalists return from Salvador
They returned to Belize on Tuesday and today members of Belize’s National Volleyball Team showed off their silver medals. Volleyball Association President Allan Sharp says that strong corporate support has been helpful, but it was the team chemistry which put Belize into the finals in El Salvador.
Allan Sharp, Vice President, BVA
“The team has been together for such a long time, I think it helps a lot. I think we have reached the point where the players that have played together, Kevin, Oscar, Gillian and those guys, are reaching the point where they can lead their own team along the confidence. I Think that they have played enough times that the confidence is high. Bottom line was the confidence of the team, especially after playing the Costa Rica game, I felt there was no stopping them. If they can win 3-2 against Costa Rica and that’s because in the first two sets there was a bit of confusion, definitely, they knew that they could do it, it was just a matter of having the confidence.”
Oscar Arnold, Team Captain
“I think a big difference this time around was the attitude of the team. This medal was long overdue personally speaking and the team had reached the level of playing or placing in the top three teams two years ago. We placed a lot of pressure on ourselves trying to make our association proud. A lot of times games were decided because of pressure situations that we placed too much emphasis on. This time around we stressed more on having fun playing on the court together as a team and as one unit. As long as we did that, we understood that winning and being successful will then follow as well.”
Local men’s volleyball competition continues on Saturday. The Volleyball Association is inviting everyone to come out, support and enjoy the games which will be held at the Belize City Centre.
