Billiards tournament opens
Good evening I’m James Adderly and you’re on board for another flight of Sports Monday. The National Guinness Eight Ball Billiard Tournament kicked off the Belize District round of the event Friday night.
Catt’s Place comes into its first confrontation as the host team against Bismark Club and are up two matches to nil when the third face off finds Catts’ Cuthbert Bailey winning game two with this fine display to force a 1-1 tie. However, Kirk Biard of Bismark comes back to grab game three in stellar fashion using good ration skills to crush Bailey 3-2.
So we go to the fourth match on the schedule and its Glen putting on a clinic for Bert Bradley to take game one of the series. In game three Glen Sheke-Biko gets a shot at the W, but cannot execute the round the table three cushion shot, leaning Bradley with a drain shot. Bradley misses the opening the door for Glen, who takes the series with this shot.
Unfortunately Bismark couldn’t locate another shooter, thus defaulting in game five, giving the big W to Catt’s Place. Meanwhile Libby Ayuso, the organizer gave us an overview of the tournament.
Libby Ayuso, Tournament Organizer
“The Guinness Eight Ball Pool Tournament is an annual event sponsored by Belize Brewing Company and Guinness. We are proud to announce that this year is our eighth annual tournament. This year we have seven teams participating for the Belize District. We also have district zones, which are divided into four. We have Corozal and Orange Walk going for the north zone. We have a west zone, which is San Ignacio and Benque and Cayo. The south is being competed between Toledo and Stann Creek. Belize City is represented in the east, so those are the four zones that are going to be competing for the nationals. This tournament will be for the entire month of August, right through until September the thirteenth when we’ll have the Belize District finals. On Saturday September sixteenth, we’ll have the finals and hopefully we can get everybody interested in pool doing these kinds of events on an annual basis.”
Turning to the volleyball scene, our Male National Team worked its way to the finals of the Central American Senior Championships at El Salvador to face Costa Rica on Sunday, but fell short 3-zip. Of course moving from last place to silver in such a short time is incredible and Sports Monday says kudos. Maybe we all ought to receive these guys when the come in tomorrow.
Meanwhile, folks our National Male Softball Team has not been able to pick up a W in two tries at the qualifying games for the Central American and Caribbean Games 2002. Maybe its the altitude at Hermosilla, Mexico, but Belize fell 12-2 to the Dominican Republic and 20-zip to Cuba. We’ll keep you posted as the scores come in.
In football news, Yabra, the city champs got off good to a positive start into the BNFA playoffs by jerking Metro Stars 3-zip yesterday at the MCC Grounds, while down south Griga Conquerors and Lagio Jumex battled to a scoreless stalemate.
