Suspected Drug Plane Circles Above Chunox Overnight
A low-flying aircraft was seen hovering above Chunox overnight, where law enforcement assets had scrambled to the vicinity of the isolated village in Corozal District in anticipation of an illegal landing. The flight which originated in South America is believed to have been a drug plane destined for northern Belize. Despite tracking the aircraft into our local airspace, the plane reportedly landed in neighboring Guatemala. There was also a report that it had touched down in Mexico. According to Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, sightings and landings have become commonplace in Belize.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
“I guess by now the entire Belizean society has come to the realization that the issue of planes coming in from South America to this region is a daily occurrence and as security forces we just need to continue to maintain our presence and vigilance in certain parts of the country where we believe that the potential for these planes to land does exist. And so, from yesterday evening up to this morning around five, we were monitoring tracks and the first track that came flew over and we later received information that it landed in Guatemala and the second track that came, again, we got information that that went to Mexico. So again, as I have always maintained that as much as we are not given credit for our efforts in deterring these planes from landing in our country we continue to do our best on a daily basis. We’re up all night monitoring these tracks, we don’t sleep and have to come to work in the morning still. It’s the life of the police and we continue to survive.”
