Princess opens theatre

Story Picture
Usually when we think of movies we think of reaching for the remote control and turning on the television. Things are about to change. News Five’s Arreini Palacio visited Belize’s latest movie theatre.

“Get your popcorn, candy and soda, the movies are about to begin.”

It’s been ten years since the movie theatre industry took a dive in Belize. In its hey day the Majestic may have been a great place to go out on a date… But eventually, with the advent of cable TV, Belize’s few remaining theatres attracted more rats and roaches than cash customers. Although the Majestic eventually converted to large screen video the last piece of celluloid was projected in 1990. Now the Princess Hotel and casino is gambling that the Belizean public will welcome a state of the art movie house.

Frank Rogers, General Manager

“It’s modern, it’s today, all the latest equipment, a thirty-five millimetre, it’s one reel that plays continually. The old theatres had two reels with an interruption. It’s a genuine modern facility.”

Modern and comfortable, from airplane seats to wall-to-wall carpeting. According to Rogers for the price of fifteen dollars adults and ten for kids, patrons can expect the latest movies and more.

“First run movies, all first run, continuously, they’ll probably change weekly. Good service, beautiful facility, air conditioned, it comes with a concession stand, with all your goodies for sale. We will also have a gift shop.”

“There may be a couple days until the theatre opens to the public and the finishing touches are still being applied. But come Saturday, filling these seats will be anything but Mission Impossible.”

Frank Rogers

“Mission Impossible 2. Hopefully, it’s in the mail.”

If every thing goes as planned, and the mailman delivers the film on time, expect to see Tom Cruise on the big screen in Belize City this weekend. Arreini Palacio for News Five.

Friday night’s movie is for invited guests only while the grand opening for the public will be held on Saturday night.
