Softballers hold fundraiser
Good evening I’m James Adderly and I’d like to welcome you to this edition of Sports Monday. The Belize District Basketball Association championship series moved into game two Friday night at the City Centre with Kulture Reggae boasting a 1-zip lead. For G.A. Roe Gap a win would push them into a decisive game three of course, a loss automatically gives the title to Kulture Reggae.
Floyd Talbert understands the gravity of this showdown and goes glass for two. On the next press, Wilfred “Chiki Blue” Nicholas gets two out of the post and Kulture Reggae is up by five. At the other end Kirk Bird works his way inside for the baby jumper, which adds two to the Gap’s total.
It begins to look like a blow out when Nicholas corrals this rebound and puts it up successfully as Kulture goes up by eleven. Then it’s by thirteen when Gadsen Ferguson beats everybody downcourt for the easy bucket.
G.A. Roe tries to come back and turn things around, so they go to Charlie Thompson who delivers here–he would finish with the game high twenty-one. Thompson is red hot when he rises on the top of the key for two. But it’s all too easy for Kulture Reggae tonight as demonstrated by Calvin Tench and at the half the River crew is up by twenty.
Can G.A. Roe Gap come back? Well they come out of intermission for a quick two as Thompson finds Jason Jones who hits. However, Kulture Reggae is the superior team tonight and it shows as Albert Musa finds Brian Luna and the two is automatic.
Luna then deals to Musa with this pretty pass and the Reggae Boys are simply unstoppable. On the next press Musa hooks up with Jr. Westby who hits the bucket picks up the foul and would lead his team with fourteen points. Just too much Kulture Reggae today as they go on to sweep the championship series with this 69-46 blowout and Sports Monday says congratulations to the 2000 senior champs and as you can see, this is a happy bunch.
Turning to the softball scene, the softball community kicked off a fundraiser at Rogers Stadium yesterday in an effort to help both the male and female national team with finances to arrive at the Central American and Caribbean qualifying games at Monterey Mexico in August. Jude Lizama explains.
Jude Lizama, Manager, Male National Team
Today’s activity is a fundraising for both the male and female national team. Sunday is a practice day for us and we plan scrimmages, inter-squad scrimmages, scrimmages against each other, that’s a regular Sunday schedule, but we decided to make it into a fundraising activity to help the players with some funding for their trip to Monterey, Mexico. The teams have been practicing now for at least two or three weeks, I speak for the male team. Today or tomorrow, we will be able to make a final selection or final cut of seventeen players and four alternates for the qualifying tournament in Mexico. That tournament will be from the first of August to the thirteen of August and we will be facing some of the best in Central America. Right now, I know that there are thirteen male teams taking part, they have considerable experience in Central America, so we will be playing against the best in Central America and the Caribbean. Teams like Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, Venezuela, Columbia, are all going to be in this tournament including Mexico, Guatemala, Salvador, Panama and Nicaragua.”
In closing, Belize Bank Wildcats won this years Junior Basketball Competition at the City Centre and today they stopped off at Belize Bank to thank their sponsor by handing financial controller Michael Coyi the champions trophy. It’s like this people, when you do good, good follows you.
