Regional coverage of Olympics announced

A press conference was held today in Barbados to announce plans for regional radio and television coverage of the Olympic games in Sydney Australia. The Caribbean Broadcasting Union and Caribbean News Agency, through their newly created subsidiary, the Caribbean Media Corporation, have purchased the broadcast rights for the games and plan to mount a strong coverage tailored to the needs of Caribbean viewers. A nine-person team will be traveling to Sydney to provide background analysis and live feeds that will focus on Caribbean athletes and events in which those athletes excel. Traditionally coverage has been provided by U.S. networks, which often overlook spectacular performances of our region’s stars in favour of their own competitors. In Belize the Olympics are once again likely to become a matter of some controversy, as with newly passed copyright legislation, the rights holders should be able to enforce their franchise against would be pirates. CBU president and Channel 5 managing director, Stewart Krohn, says his organization will seek to take a common sense approach to the project under which all the nation’s broadcasters and cable systems can share the costs of the games and provide the public with full uninterrupted coverage. If such cooperation cannot be achieved it could mean a repeat of the situation in 1996. At that time, in the absence of a strong copyright law, the Supreme Court declined to order an injunction preventing unauthorized broadcast of the Atlanta Games.
