Guinea Grass and Shipyard Remain under Lockdown

Two communities in the Orange Walk South constituency have also been placed in quarantine. Positive COVID-19 cases have been indentified in Guinea Gras Village and in the Shipyard Community. Area Representative Jose Abelardo Mai says that the difficulty in Shipyard is that the Mennonite community has not been kept abreast of the realities of the pandemic.  Mai also says that villagers of Fireburn, a small village between Shipyard and Guinea Grass, have been assured that they will be able to travel to Shipyard to purchase supplies.

“Guinea Grass is the biggest village in Orange Walk Town. Fireburn is the smallest village in Orange Walk Town. Fireburn doesn’t have any big stores and after the lockdown I spoke to the Attorney General and we worked out something with the Commandant in Orange Walk Mister Cocom that the people from Fireburn will be allowed to go and purchase because Shipyard has big stores and Guinea Grass has Chinese stores too. There are not available resources in Guinea Grass; there is easier access to stores and so on. Those people who work at ASR, at the cane field after the lockdown on Thursday they got paid on Friday so they have not collected their salaries since then.  Those are the people that will have problems because they don’t have money.”
