Police and prison official differ on murder

Today the police released the results of their preliminary investigation into Tuesday’s murder of inmate Glenford Gillett…and the report is very different from the account given by Prison Governor Bernard Adolphus on this broadcast yesterday. When News Five visited the Hattieville Correctional Facility, Adolphus told us that the stabbing incident happened outside on the prison compound when the inmates were on recreation. However, the police say their investigation has revealed that the incident actually took place inside Gillett’s medium security cell. According to a police press release, sometime between eleven a.m. and noon, three prisoners from the maximum-security area entered cell number 41. Inside the room were Gillett and his cellmate, John Bartley. It is not clear what happened next but police say shortly after, Gillett was seen running from the cell bleeding heavily while Bartley had a large cut wound to his forehead. Both Gillett and Bartley were rushed to the KHMH but Gillett, who received several stab wounds to his chest, collarbone and back was pronounced dead on arrival. Although Adolphus stated that it was one Kelvin Francis who inflicted the stab wounds, police say at this time they do not know who did the stabbing but the weapon used was a steel rod. Police also say at this time they do not have a motive for the murder. When News Five called the Department of Corrections to speak to Adolphus we were told to call Marisa Quan, DOC’s public relations officer. Our calls, however, went unanswered. Sources tell News Five the three inmates who made their way from maximum security had to pass a guard before they entered the medium security section, which is separated by a fence. How they managed to do this with a concealed weapon is still unknown.
