P.S.U. Engaged with Cost-Saving Committee
In respect of the government’s wage bill and the need to cut costs incurred by government departments, First Vice President Dean Flowers says that a meeting is to be convened to discuss austerity measures that can taken across the public sector.
Dean Flowers, 1st Vice President, P.S.U.
“The Public Service Union does in fact have regular discussions and we do have a seat at the table where austerity measures are concerned. I am also pleased to inform that there has been the convening and the assembling of the cost saving committee and I believe, as a matter of fact, they will be meeting today to see how swiftly they can move to implement some of the cost saving measures. So we do have a seat at the table, yes we are a major and significant player in those decisions, but coming back to the labour amendment bill 2020, I think that I need to register our concern that it is really a shame that a bill was passed through the House in all three readings, being debated in the Senate this morning, without the labour advisory board even bringing that matter to the national trade union congress. We have representation on that board and it was never brought there. So we believe that the government acted in bad faith and so we are saying to the Senate this morning that that bill needs to be rejected in its entirety and for there to be greater consultations.”
