Will GOB pay BECOL if BEL doesn’t?
On Wednesday, the United Democratic Party sent out a press release concerning an agreement between the Government of Belize and the Belize Electricity Limited. According to the release, under the power purchase agreement, BEL had to take or pay for a minimum of 85 gigawatt hours every year from BECOL, the owners of Mollejon. However, it seems that BEL has been receiving less than the agreed amount and has now decided to only pay for what it’s getting. While that seems logical, the UDP says through the power purchase agreement, the government would have to pay what BEL doesn’t. News Five attempted to get a comment from GOB today, but according to the press office, the government is currently reviewing its position and is not able to give out any further information. As to BEL, News Five was told that Chief Executive Officer Lynn Young was out of the country and Public Relations Manager, Diana Forman was unavailable. So it seems the only people with anything to say about this issue is the UDP.
