Body recovered from the Mopan River
The body of a man missing since Sunday has been found. On Monday police pulled the body of 24-year old Guatemalan Anner de Jesus Barahona from the Mopan River. A post mortem has confirmed Barahona drowned. According to police reports, on Sunday morning three men, believed to be Guatemalans, were crossing the Mopan River on horseback heading for Guatemala, when one of the men fell into the strong current and never resurfaced. Police on patrol in the area at the time tried to reach the man but were unsuccessful. Barahona’s two companions fled the scene. Barahona was a labourer in the border town of Melchor de Mencos, Guatemala. As for a Nigerian woman who went missing after a shipwreck off Wee Wee Caye on June 8th, tonight police tell News Five that the search for her has been called off. According to Public Relations Officer Christy Castillo, Police and BDF are no longer patrolling the area and the matter has been referred to the Belize Ports Authority. News Five made repeated attempts to contact officials there on the status of their investigation, but they proved futile. On June 8th, a Honduran vessel carrying 14 passengers from Puerto Cortez to Dangriga overturned near Wee Wee Caye. Four people never made it to shore. Three of the bodies were recovered from the area shortly after the accident.
