Overcoming Literacy Deterrents in the Media

Isani Cayetano

During the discussion this morning, it was pointed out by the reporters in attendance that perhaps the biggest deterrent to literacy in the technological era is the excessive use of shorthand and abbreviation.  Here’s a snippet from that conversation.

Isani Cayetano, Reporter, Channel 5

“One of the biggest challenges that I see with younger people is that everything is given to them in shorthand, so that they don‘t know how to properly express themselves in the English language with all the grammar and the mechanics of it because everything is LOL, BRB, et cetera and I think it affects their ability to be able to read, comprehend and correspond in that manner.”

Renee Trujillo, Reporter, Love FM

Renee Trujillo

“With all of these coming on stream we‘re really shortchanging our young people because that, I can tell you, those are the contributors to how to how I ended up in this career in media.”
