Hubert Enriquez reinstated in PSU
After being expelled from the Public Service Union for seeking political office earlier this year, tonight, Hubert Enriquez has his job back. In its AGM in Corozal last weekend, members of the union voted that Enriquez be reinstated as Secretary General. Enriquez was expelled in February of this year when he decided to run for office in the Belmopan City Council Elections. According to the PSU, public officers are forbidden from political activity and they felt that it was unethical for the Secretary General of the union to do so. Enriquez saw the move as “clearly out of sync” with the principles of the trade union movement since he resigned from the public service 2-years ago and had filed an appeal. In an interview with News Five today, Enriquez says he got his chance to state his position and was very happy that the results of the voting were “quite handsomely” in his favor. Enriquez says the action of the members should make it easier for other interested people to run for political office although he says he has not considered taking that route again.
