Four missing at sea after boating accident
At news time tonight, Dangriga police are still searching the sea in the area near Wee Wee Caye for 4 people who went missing after their boat capsized late Thursday night. According to police, the unnamed vessel, believed to be registered in Honduras, was traveling to Dangriga around midnight with 12 passengers when rough seas caused it to overturn. 8 people made it safely to Wee Wee Caye, including the captain of the dugout 25-foot dory, Honduran Julio Cabrero. Police say they have not been able to determine why the boat was traveling that late at night. Fishermen from the area tell News Five it is highly unusual for anyone to travel at that hour, in those conditions and in that kind of boat. So far the only statement Captain Cabrero has been able to give police is that he had been chartered to bring Belizeans George Hall and 13-year old Dorothy Adamu, Syrians David Kamale and Gabriel Kalu, Hondurans Maria Del Carmen and Roberto Thomas and Maureen Omame a Nigerian, in addition to 3 more unidentified Nigerians and one Belizean, from Puerto Cortez, Honduras to Dangriga. Police and BDF boats and divers will continue to look for the 4 missing persons well into tomorrow. Wee Wee Caye is located about 15 miles south of Dangriga.
