NDACC targets primary school students
Are you the parent of a ten year old? Even if you didn’t say yes, you should be surprised, and concerned, to know that Belizean children as young as age ten are using drugs. That statistic has prompted the National Drug Abuse Control Council to target primary school students as part of Drug Awareness Week. NDACC welcomed students from several Belize City schools today to their resource centre. Marlon McNab, Belize District Coordinator for NDACC says he hopes the students and the public at large, will not be afraid to knock on their doors.

“One of the things we want them to know is that we want NDACC to be their home, even if they don’t have a research for their teacher, what they can do is to just come in and look at the videos that we have or just pick up a book and read. We are getting a lot more information; a lot more information that is out there too. Unfortunately, the shipment has not come in as yet. We are hoping that we will be able to have all those today, but we don’t have all of them. I need to apologize for that, but we will get them very soon. That’s the rationale behind it, and the general public is invited to.”
“But what we want to do is to not only let the public realize it’s for the students, but it is for anyone who wants to come in. For parents, who want to come in and find out information and even the media.”
“The highlight of today also is the launching of our mascot, which is Junior the Jabiru. We had a consultation with several teachers and students throughout the country of Belize and they finally came up with that one. Also the NDACC activity book, which each student will be receiving a copy of. That was produced by the students.”
Drug Awareness Week ends this Friday. The NDACC Resource centre is located on Freetown Road in Belize City.
