Belize Peace Movement Asks Wil Maheia to Withdraw from Re-Districting Case
One of the claimants that lodged the claim with the Belize Peace Movement is Wil Maheia. He is a politician who has ran several times in the south but last week he announced that he will be running in the Fort George Division in Belize City under the Belize Progressive Party. He says that Fort George is a small division so campaigning will be cheaper. But as soon as he announced his intention to run, the Belize Peace Movement sent a letter to Maheia, expressing grave concern. According to Lopez, the B.P.M. does not support Maheia’s candidacy and they are asking him to make the right choice.
Robert Lopez, Belize Peace Movement
“I am hoping that Mister Maheia, he knows his options, and we are hoping that he will make the right choice. We have asked him to certainly step down as claimant. We feel that yes it could somehow jeopardize the case. Other lawyers feel it doesn’t but we will see how that goes. We are hoping that Mister Maheia makes the right choice. He still has time. Look at this scenario Hipolito, we go to an election and Mister Maheia participates and then we get the CCJ to declare that elections null and void and he is a claimant who ran in it.. You know you really can’t have your cake and eat. You can’t have one foot in an election and another foot in a case saying that very election is constitutional. We tried our best to try to explain it to him and unfortunately he sees it otherwise.”
