Dangriga band releases new CD

They are among a growing number of Punta Rock bands, but the Dangriga based group known as Ugurau believes it has something special to offer. According to three of its members, their new CD “Punta Rock Ambassadors”, is more than just music to shake to.
Allan Castillo, Lead Keyboard Player
“It’s different because for the first time as a group we’ve taken the time necessary to produce an extremely high quality recording. Not only that, every song addresses a social issue. It isn’t one of the music that’s–per se–purely entertainment. It tries to say something that we see going wrong in society.”
Jason Martinez, Lead Vocalist
“By the music we play, we try to send the message to the youths them. You have to listen to the lyrics of the song. We have a song named “Baby Father”, which has a message to the youths about AIDS, which is about the place. Once they listen to the lyrics, we send the message across to them.”
Stewart Krohn
“The band has been together for almost 10 years now, during that time, only 2 CD’s or 2 albums. The first one being “Puntalicous”, why so long between albums?”
Allan Castillo
“Well at first the means weren’t there to do so. As a group, it’s a term of finance. As a group, though we have been together for 10 years there have been times when we separated, but the essence of a group has stayed together. Now we are at a point where we own our equipment ourselves, we own our transport ourselves, we own the recording studio ourselves. Now there is not that hindrance anymore. We now have the means to do it and there will never be such a gap again.”
The CD is mostly Punta Rock but also includes some reggae and Cumbia. With the exception of two traditional Garifuna songs all of the tracks are original compositions. In case you are wondering…the word Ugurau is Garifuna for hammock.
