B.I.T. arms youths with skills

It may not be as well known as the Centre for Employment Training but for the last half decade a tiny educational institution in Belize City has been doing its part to impart marketable skills to young people. This morning News Five’s Jacqueline Woods dropped in for a look.

In 1995, the Belize institute of Technology opened its doors to the Belizean public. The institution, which offers classes in electrical and electronic engineering, has an enrollment of thirty students. Today, the electronic student body held an open day to exhibit the works that were completed during a training programme.

Elena Sosa, Secretary, B.I.T.

“This is a training programme that took seven and half months for the students to learn in an electronic field and also computer and monitor repairs and today is the open day for the students and the public to see what BIT has accomplished along with YSPL.”

The programme, which was held in conjunction with the Youth Start Plan, involved the students building a complete sound system and T.V antenna. The students also learned how to fix the computer. The open day was the first for the Belize Institute of Technology.

B.I.T. is located at the corner of St. Thomas and 12th Streets.
