Wil Maheia, the David to the Goliath in Fort George?

We also got an opportunity to speak with B.P.P.’s candidate in Fort George, Wil Maheia.  Since he announced his candidacy, he has faced harsh criticism for running in a constituency that he hasn’t lived in.  In fact, he has offered himself for political office in his hometown of Punta Gorda, but ran unsuccessfully. Today, we asked him about his intention to run in that division in light of the fact that Fort George has traditionally been what is considered a “safe seat” for the P.U.P.  Maheia says just you wait until November eleventh:

Andrea Polanco

“One of the criticism we have heard recently is that Wil dah nuh from Fort George. Are you there to run with the intention to win or are you there as a spoiler? One would think it is an immediate handover to Mr. Usher who replaced Mr. Musa. So, what’s your intention in Fort George, Wil?”

“You know, one of the thing is, I am glad you ask that question, because it is the same way people felt when young Derek Aikman went against George Price and he beat George Price; and when Hutchy gone up against Ralph Fonseca and he beat Ralph Fonesca. And on the night of the eleventh you wah hear Wil Maheia tek down the Musa-Usher family because it is possible.”

Maheia pointed out that he is not a total stranger to the Fort George Division. He says that he has worked there before and has spent countless summers. He says his family ties connect him to the constituency.
