Faber Criticizes Opposition for Motorcades on Nomination Day
Party Leader Patrick Faber, of the United Democratic Party, weighed in on motorcades that were held this morning by opposition candidates. In Belize City, P.U.P. Queen Square candidate Allan Pollard staged a sizeable procession of vehicles with dozens of party supporters as he made his way to Saint John’s Anglican School to be nominated. The show of political muscle flew in the face of a letter written by Commissioner of Police Chester Williams asking the party to cancel such activities amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I observed some constituencies sticking to what their party leader asked them to do and of course the police cautioned them not to do. But by and large, we still saw some constituencies that had very little regard for that. San Pedro comes to mind immediately, but I am pretty sure there are others. And I don’t want to be the one to point fingers but that, to me, is reckless behavior and it doesn’t speak well for the opposition party, in my view. I think that people want a government, a party in government that is responsible and as far as I am the leader of this party that is what we will aim for. So nomination day is normally about flexing your political muscle, we made the decision quite a bit before today to make sure that we are not going to be participating in any kind of event that will help to spread COVID-19 and help to make fighting the disease in this country any more difficult.”
